it’s easy to say this place isn’t beautiful

About

The exhibition it‘s easy to say this place isn‘t beautiful shows black-and-white photographs by Janis Vetter that deal with materials and places in a unique way by showing that it is always worth taking a second look in order to recognize beauty in the supposedly banal.

As a landscape architect, photographer and filmmaker, Janis Vetter‘s trained eye captures the expressive power of the inconspicuous and manages to transfer this mood through clever angles and special light-shadow relationships. The image details often show the clash of nature and culture, but in everyday and ordinary situations that seem almost harmonious and not like the brutal interventions they actually are. The square format, created by using a Lubitel 166B medium format camera, dissolves the boundaries between landscape and portrait, giving the images
the timeless and iconic appeal of record covers.

In addition, Janis Vetter exhibits two grass pavers, as can be seen in one of the photographs. These found objects are meant to encourage us to question the aesthetics of conventional objects and design elements. Why are some things more striking than others? What do we perceive as »normal« and »ordinary«? What disturbs us? How do we rate and value these things?
